  • NEWSBYTE: U.S. DOE Modifies Testing for Some Electric Motors Print Page Tell Friend

    July 2009 (09NB-212)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has amended its testing requirements for certain types of electric motors, incorporating by reference updated versions of three industry standards.

According to the Final Rule published in the July 7, 2009 issue of the Federal Register, the DOE has incorporated into 10 CFR 431 updated standards that prescribe testing procedures for measuring the energy efficiency of single-phase and polyphase small electric motors. The updated standards include:

         >CAN/CSA-C747-94 (Reaffirmed 2005), Test Methods for Single and Three-Phase Small Motors

         >IEEE Std 114-2001, IEEE Standard Test Procedure for Single-Phase Induction Motors

           (approved, December 6, 2001)

         >IEEE Std 112-2004, IEEE Standard Test Procedure for Polyphase Induction Motors and Generators

           (approved, February 9, 2004)

The DOE’s Final Rule also codifies the statutory definition for the term “small electric motor” to mean “a NEMA general purpose alternating current single-speed induction motor, built in a two-digit frame number series in accordance with NEMA Standards publication MG1-1987, including IEC metric equivalent motors.”

The complete text of the DOE’s Final Rule as published in the Federal Register is available at http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/pdf/E9-15795.pdf.
